Before going into meditation techniques, you will have to understand your own characters, your inner character. Inner character means the real you minus all the inputs others give you, no matter it is your parents, friends, relative or even the society.
If you are someone who is active, who feels good after exercise and needs constant company, afraid of loneliness then active meditation is suitable for you. Active meditation can be work in groups. There are a lot of active meditation groups out there that you can choose from nowadays.
Active meditation is divided into two level. One is base on the concept of letting your body drain of energy in order to achieve fulfillment or meditation state. Such meditation usually starts with different body movement of 30 to 40 minutes, follow by stillness for 10 to 20 minutes. In the first few lessons of such meditation, you will experience glimpses of meditative state during the stillness of one to two minutes. After some practice you will experience longer period of meditation state and you will find that it is easier for you to go into his no-mind state. With further practice, you will find that even during the active stage - the body movement stage you starts to have glimpses of the stillness. One example of this kind of meditation is yoga meditation.
The second type of active meditation is for those who could not accept heavy exercise. The same concept is applied but you will be aware of your inner-self through techniques. One of them is chanting meditation. With chanting, you are using your own voice and your listening as awareness, which will bring you to your inner self. Such method will enable you to see yourself as “inner” and “outer” self but such methods are not to be used for deep meditation.
If you like solitary, quietness and do feels good in inactive activity like sleeping or just purely doing nothing, then passive meditation is for you. What is passive meditation? Relaxation techniques or meditation like meditation with relaxation music are passive meditations. Before going into passive meditation, a certain level of understanding of life is needed and it is the basic the entry point of passive meditation. Why? Without any understanding, mind will exist and create delusions. But once you had experience the silentness of the inner and outer, deeper meditation is experience. Buddhist meditation, sitting in a lotus position is one of passive meditation.
Eventually, all deep meditation has to be passive meditation. With the evolutions of the meditation techniques created by the masters today, active meditation can become part of the daily life too.
